Fire the President
Nov 05, 2009
A recent NBC News/Wallstreet Journal poll looked at President Obama’s approval rating on a variety of subjects. One question asked respondents about 16 characteristics, half of which related to Obama “the man,” half of which related to Obama “the president.” According to the results, as a person, Obama is still very well liked: his scores averaged in the 60’s. As for what he’s accomplished so far on the job, his scores averaged in the low 40’s.
I’ve learned a lot of valuable lessons throughout my career. One of those things is that in order to be successful in business, you can’t worry about whether people like you – you have to worry about whether they respect you. Oftentimes, we grow to like those people who we respect, but we hardly ever grow to respect those people we like.
Let’s apply this same rule to politics since, after all, we should be running America like a business. Politicians should worry about being respected rather than being liked. Unfortunately, they don’t. And the American people let them get away with it. Take President Obama for instance. We elected him based on how much we liked him as a person rather than on the respect he earned for his past business and political successes. And look where it’s gotten us. Nearly a year after being elected, the American people don’t feel that President Obama has produced the measurable results to earn their respect.
On the other hand, look at someone like Mitt Romney. He had an impressive record in corporate America as VP of Bain & Company, then as founder of Bain Capital, then as CEO of Bain & Company. After single-handedly changing the fate of the previously doomed 2002 Winter Olympics, he was elected Governor of Massachusetts, where he went on to completely turn around the state’s economy, school system and healthcare system…all without raising taxes or increasing debt. And I dare you to find more than a handful of people in the entire State of Massachusetts who don’t respect and like Mitt Romney.
If only someone like Romney had run for President. He tried. But he didn’t get the nomination. Instead, we voted President Obama into office. Instead, we have a President who the American people like but don’t respect. How long are we going to refuse to run America like a business until we see the error of our ways? Too bad we can’t fire Obama.
I believe it’s called the Dinkins Effect. A vote is a purchase and we purchase products based on the change we’re told they’ll bring to our life. Now that he’s home and out of the box, Obama doesn’t look so life changing. Billy Mays would be proud.
I respect and like your article!
I agree 100%.
We need to shrink the government and run it like a business. I think Obama got voted for several reasons, some reasons I can say and others I can’t; but one thing I do believe helped him greatly was that he did a fine job of branding and marketing his message, every aspect of it was phenomenal and well executed. I’d like to see more Republications realize the importance of this (including Romney) prior to the 2012 elections — since we all know Obama will be a one term president.
Thanks for the post.
what can he really do? these additional government bodies ar dug in like Alabama ticks.
at least he didn’t make even more outlandish promises, his respect/like ration would be even worse.
Since it will soon become apparent China is not going to spend a path for the US as anticipated, we all should just nod in agreement and pretend its all good.
Some of us have to work for the money.
What a great article and a very valid point. During an economic crisis, Romney was the exact presidential candidate this country needed. He has all the experience and history to prove that he can handle tough economic times. Unfortunately too many people drank the obama kool-aid and now we’re stuck with a celebrity doing talk shows instead of a work horse fixing our country. Fantastic article, great points!
hey JZ give Mr. Obama a chance. rome was not built in a day.
hell when you and i back in the day played ball it took alittle time to get it right.
it took george afew years and look where it got us. if you want my advise,
we should put bill back in office.
Jordan,
I really respect and agree with your perspective on running America like a business. Your perspective is completely in line with the documentary I am working on the mindset of entrepreneurs. Much more to come on that…
I think part of the discussion about what has or has not been accomplished by our president must include the infighting and back stabbing of politicians in the house and senate who love to collect pay checks and make few if any actual decisions. I think all politicians should be paid based on performance. Get nothing done, get no pay.
Like the current president or not, to hold him solely responsible for what does or doesn’t get done for the country seems to me to be like going through life with blinders on. We should
in the least hold the whole crew accountable including the crazy men who held the office before Mr. Obama.
