How to Make Your First Million
Feb 24, 2010
Growing up in Old Bridge, New Jersey, I noticed a couple of things at a very young age. One: every one of my parent’s friends hated what they did for a living. And two: every one of my friend’s parents hated what they did for a living. So I decided early on that I wanted and HAD to find something I would love to do.
As a young boy I searched for the career that would inspire and motivate me everyday. And at the young age of eight, I met the individual who would eventually inspire my career in advertising.
Jordanism: Never go to work to collect a paycheck.
I never went to work to collect a paycheck. Never. Instead, I went to work everyday to make a difference in my clients’ businesses and to earn new business in every sector I possibly could. To my surprise, the work became more and more fun, and my clients’ success became an addiction. The more success they had, the more success I wanted for them. As Zimmerman Advertising started to grow, miraculously, so did my earnings. And before I knew it, I had made my first million dollars…just like that.
Too many people chase the dollar and lose the vision for finding a career that really inspires them. They get consumed with bringing home a paycheck and forget about all of the things they are really passionate about, all of the things they care about. You can’t make your first million if you don’t love what you do. And if you can’t make your first million, you can’t make your second million, third million, and so on. However, once you make that first million loving what you do, millions and millions more will follow.
Don’t be afraid to leave the miserable job you have. I promise you that if you find a career that inspires you, the future will be yours. Enjoy the ride. And send me a thank you note when you make your first million.
That is powerful advice coming from a multi-millionaire!
My Dad hated his job. He gave me the same advice, “Do what you love. ” It was the first career advice I ever received…and still the best.
The timing of this advice could not be more on point for me. Thanks you and I will send you a thank you note
So can i work for you? Pro Bono for the trade of learning?
My sentiments exactly. Quit college where I was studying something I hated to chase the career I REALLY loved. Never regretted it.
I’ll send you that Thank You note very soon.
One thing people have to remember is that It’s not always going to be easy. In fact at first it might be REALLY HARD. It takes amazing strength of will and a deep well of determination.
This piece of advice couldn’t have come at a better time. I’ve been thinking about this for a very long time and when I read your blog it hit me like a comet. A thank you note will be coming your way from South Africa.
Will be sure to send you that note! Thanks for the words of wisdom. –JD
Agreed…as I’ve spent the last few months soul searching to make this change. My job today has a big title and nice paycheck….but does not get me excited. Life is too short to live this way.
I have found the right path for me….now I am patiently working to build the opportunity.
This is exactly what I needed.
Thank you for the inspiring words. I’ll send you another thank you note when I make my first million.
I agree and think the hardest part of doing what you love to do is to not get distracted by the money- needs and wants.
Easier said than done, but this blog totally confirmed the thought process we all should have to be successful in what we do.
I have been thinking about that n will make that move next year
Great point! That is why I will be contacting you soon. I have a vision and a service and I need an hour to show you. You are “on my A list” to growing my new business. Thanks Jordan!
