Down with Mudslinging
Nov 02, 2010
I didn’t think it was possible, but it seems like the political ads are actually getting fiercer as today’s midterm elections get closer. The candidates continue to viciously and personally attack one another. I have no idea what most of them stand for because they haven’t told us. The only thing I know is why they don’t like their opponent. That’s going to do very little to help me decide how to vote.
I don’t see how the candidates can be so blind. I cannot understand why they refuse to see that the American people are sick nearly to death of all the mudslinging. But I have a solution: outlaw mudslinging. Yes, you read that correctly! I think mudslinging should be OUTLAWED!! Before you dismiss it simply because you think it would never happen, think about it. There are long lists of laws and regulations governing other advertising. Why shouldn’t something similar be in place for political advertising? Why should politicians and candidates be held to any less of a standard than other products and companies? They shouldn’t!!
I was on Fox Business yesterday with Tracy Byrnes discussing political ads, mudslinging, and some of the few politicians out there that are actually getting it right. Take a look – you’ll see what it means to discuss the real issues.
Did you know that ‘mudslinging’ actually originated in the 19th century when the other party would literally sling mud at the underdog to disrupt and distract him? Yet somehow this antiquated tradition has made its way into our modern day political system. Let’s outlaw mudslinging from now on. Let’s force our candidates to talk about the real problems and what they’re going to do to fix them. What are they actually going to do once they take office? If they can’t tell us that, then they don’t deserve to run, much less win.

I agree, its absurd !! I have no idea on how to make an intellegent choice based on knowledge of a candidate , I feel like simply closing my eyes at the poll and pin the vote on the donkey and hope it all works out …. Jordan, I like and agreed with your idea of tighter regulation with Political Advertising !! Something needs to be done to control 100% of ads nothing more ” mud sliniging ” …………. doesnt opur scholl systems call that ” verbal bullying “, millions and millions of dollars in fact have been poured in to this form of ” American Political Advertising ” Heard Rick Scott spent $73 M , and he is about getting people back to work !! Well if he would have just put that $73 million back into the hands of the people of Florida ” like our school teachers pay ” they at least wouldnt have to worry about work !!
I could go on and on , but , I will either start to feel like i am on a rant like Dennis Miller or am I becoming a politician !!
I totally agree with you-I did not want to go vote today because I felt that none of the candidates actually told us what they stood for. After listening to all the ads, I do not think any of them should be in office. I wanted to vote none of the above. This group of people are going to be our elected officials and they are going to make decisions on our behalf, which affect all of us and all we know about them is that they made a lot of mistakes before they desided to run for office.
It seems like they will never change. But I guess anything is possible!
