Resolutions: Just Do It
You already know you should make a New Year’s resolution for 2011. (If you don’t know why, you obviously haven’t read my last post.) And you know that in order to have any hope of achieving it, you have to have a concrete plan.

Jordanism: I heard there was a recession. I chose NOT to participate.

When it comes to business, everyone knows the economy stinks. Everyone knows we are confronting one of the most challenging economic environments in decades. We are facing a national crisis with respect to the housing market and foreclosures, and the unemployment rate continues to climb…and that’s just a few of the issues this country is currently dealing with.

I get it. I’m not immune to feeling the same pressures everyone else out there is feeling. But you know what I say? Who cares?! To hell with everything – and everybody – that tries to get in your way!!

If you’re thinking about starting your own business, do it!! I cannot stress enough the importance of having a business plan before you do anything else. You cannot, I repeat CANNOT, succeed in business without having a written business plan. Every single division of Zimmerman has a business plan. Why? Because I want to make sure every single division of Zimmerman succeeds! And the way to do that is to have a business plan in place that walks you through every step of the way.

What if you’re not planning to start your own business? What if you’re trying to find a new job? Or what if you’re unemployed? What if you want to go after that promotion you’ve had your eye on for months? Whatever business goal you set for yourself, you should still put together a plan outlining exactly how you will achieve that goal. Set smaller goals for yourself along the way to make sure you’re staying on track. Put metrics in place to measure your progress so you can adjust your actions accordingly. Think of it as your own personal business plan for 2011.

Forget about the down economy. Forget about the dismal housing market. Forget about the high unemployment rate. If you had a bad year last year, now’s the time to stop making excuses. What are your hopes and dreams? What do you really want to accomplish in 2011? So what’s stopping you? There’s no substitute for hard work and perseverance. Now’s the perfect time to get ahead while everyone else is busy complaining about why they’re stuck in the same place as they were last year. Like Nike always says, “Just Do It.”
