This video was brought to my attention today. I know it’s 18 minutes long but you should watch every minute of it, rewind it and watch it again. It has that much of an impact.
When I was introduced to this video I was a bit skeptical, but just a few minutes in and i realized I was hearing a message that explains business in an ever increasing social world.
I’m going to be sharing this video with as many people as possible. Some people will listen, some won’t. Some will agree but some will yawn and call it baloney. But for those of you who “get it”, this video will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up,
This video features Simon Sinek. Sinek wrote a book in 2009 titled “Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action”. The book delves into what he says is a “naturally occurring pattern, grounded in the biology of human decision-making”.
Sinek states two foundational tenets in his book and in this video.
1. “People Don’t Buy What You Do…They Buy Why You Do It!”
2. “The goal isn’t to do business with everyone, the goal is to do business with those who believe what you believe.“
Being in the marketing business, I’m seeing these statements becoming more and more relevant in a world driven by social media. As Sinek says, the Law of Diffusion of Innovation is affecting business on many levels.
Please, take a few moments and watch this video and think. Think hard about your “Why”… think hard about who you’re doing business with.
Do they believe what you believe? How would your business change if you sought out people who believe what you believe and understand your reasoning behind what it is you do?
In a world of Twitter, Facebook and a dozen other social networks, it’s becoming easier and easier for people to see what you are all about. What will they see when they look at you?
