You’re probably wondering, what the heck is the Reticular Activation System?
The simplest way for me to answer that is to pose a question to you. Have you ever been in a store or at a festival and heard your child cry out for you over the din of the crowd? Have you ever been walking through a busy airport and even with all of the noise, hustle and bustle of activity, you still heard your name or flight information over the loudspeaker?
Well that was your Reticular Activating System (RAS) in action. Your RAS is the automatic trigger in your brain that allows you to hone in on important and relevant information…even when you think you’re not paying attention.
Your RAS is essentially a self-programmed filter between your conscious and subconscious minds. You place those filters in your mind. You don’t even have to think about it. For instance, no one needs to tell you to listen for your child’s voice. It’s inherent. It’s programmed in.
However, what is really interesting is that if you want to you CAN consciously and with deliberate thought, program goals, affirmations and visualizations.
Napoleon Hill knew this and often said that we can achieve any goal if we think about it and eliminate negative thoughts. That’s pure RAS. Your RAS doesn’t know the difference between reality and imagination so if you believe it and focus on it you can actually get your mind to believe it.
Sound far fetched? Ask Michael Jordan. Ask Larry Bird. Ask Joe Montana. Great athletes are who they are in great part due to their ability to visualize their success.
You may not be an NBA scoring champion or a Super Bowl winning quarterback, but you can certainly improve your business and personal life by using some of the same tools that they use.
