When you deliver actual, insight-driven value to the consumer that means the consumer delivers loyalty and positive word-of-mouth in return. Delivering only a discount, though, means the consumer has no loyalty, and no reason to buy your brand again, once someone offers a deeper discount.

As we prepare to spend time with our families on Thanksgiving, it makes sense to stop and think for a moment about the things we are most grateful for. Personally, I know I have a lot of wonderful blessings in life, starting with the relationships that enrich me more than money ever could. Close connections to family, friends, and colleagues: Those blessings, of course, are far more important than any material wealth.

Predictably, this point of view is not popular in some circles — at CNBC, for instance, which would probably find a way to take pot-shots at Gingrich if he said that cranberries can be tasty additions to a Thanksgiving feast. I wonder: Are some members of the media dug in so far into their own ideology that they feel they have a moral obligation to disagree with every word that comes out of Newt’s mouth?

Desperation is a great starting point for a new career. All the intense emotions you are feeling as you contemplate making your way through the next phase of your life can either be your greatest enemy or your most important ally. If those emotions paralyze you, they are going to be your enemy. If they kick you in the ass and get you moving, if they remind you that you have to take immediate action, then you will find that those intense emotions are your biggest ally.
