If you are the leader of an enterprise, people are going to be looking to you to set the standard for quality in the organization. If you set the bar low, intentionally or unintentionally, then your organization will fail. You have to set the bar high, consciously, and keep it high, if you want to succeed.

I always admired Al Davis a great deal, and saw him as a special kind of role model. He embraced the "maverick" label, and he successfully walked the thin line between being feared and being loved. Perhaps most importantly, he had a long-term commitment to excellence in the art of branding. The iconic silver-and-black Raiders logo is one of the most enduring brands in all of sports.

There are a lot of people I run into every day who have simply taken themselves out of the game. I bet you run into them, too.

I'm talking about the people who have simply stopped giving it their all. I'm talking about the people who have stopped playing to win...

Some people have a knack for getting themselves out of tough situations, of fighting their way out of a corner. When the going gets tough, these are the people that always manage to find a way out. They’re usually praised for their tenacity, their determination, their resolve, their grit.

My question is, ‘Why did they let themselves get backed into a corner in the first place?’

Without a doubt, I want to surround myself with inspired, ignited people (not people looking to be inspired). I want driven people on my team. But does that mean I want a team full of leaders with the same traits that I have? Absolutely not!!

In the business world, and in life, you must be prepared. Period. You must always be prepared for whatever the world throws at you. You must be able to think on your feet, and you must be quick. And you must do these things in a way so that no one ever sees you sweat!!

I always say that this country would be much better off if businessmen and businesswomen ran it instead of career politicians. A story that aired last week on “The American Spirit” segment of the CBS Evening News reinforced this belief.

I received an email last week from someone that spoke to me so much that I decided to blog about it. The email said:

“Often there’s a disconnect between the infectious inspiration that a leader delivers and those who work for the company under less inspiring individuals. […] Clearly not every individual can keep their engines revving with the same intensity. They need guidance.”

I say that’s complete crap!!
