
I have more patience for baseball during the playoffs, and on Opening Day, than I do during the rest of the season. During the playoffs, something actually IS happening. And on Opening Day, anything still COULD happen… Opening Day makes dreamers out of everyone. Opening Day is the time when you can laugh and remember how stupid the smart money can be. Opening day reminds you that this is still a country where big dreams, focus, and hard work can pay off.

Hat Trick Plus One

In hockey, when you score three goals in a single game, they call that a “hat trick.” It’s pretty tough to do. For south Florida hockey fans it’s time to celebrate a very special player who just scored a “hat trick plus one.”

Character is Everything

Penn State’s next head coach must, before anything else, be person of character. Bobby Stoops of Oklahoma comes to mind. So does John Wooden, the legendary UCLA basketball coach. You can’t picture either of those coaches turning a blind eye to his obligations the way Paterno did. Are coaches like that easy to find?

The Cowardly Lion

It is fashionable in some places to make excuses for the legendary Penn State coach Joe Paterno, whose exit from the school he loved is now being spun as a sad but understandable error in judgment, given his status as an “old school” athletic leader.
That is bullshit.

Just Win, Baby

I always admired Al Davis a great deal, and saw him as a special kind of role model. He embraced the “maverick” label, and he successfully walked the thin line between being feared and being loved. Perhaps most importantly, he had a long-term commitment to excellence in the art of branding. The iconic silver-and-black Raiders logo is one of the most enduring brands in all of sports.
