I have more patience for baseball during the playoffs, and on Opening Day, than I do during the rest of the season. During the playoffs, something actually IS happening. And on Opening Day, anything still COULD happen... Opening Day makes dreamers out of everyone. Opening Day is the time when you can laugh and remember how stupid the smart money can be. Opening day reminds you that this is still a country where big dreams, focus, and hard work can pay off.

In hockey, when you score three goals in a single game, they call that a "hat trick." It's pretty tough to do. For south Florida hockey fans it's time to celebrate a very special player who just scored a "hat trick plus one."

Penn State's next head coach must, before anything else, be person of character. Bobby Stoops of Oklahoma comes to mind. So does John Wooden, the legendary UCLA basketball coach. You can't picture either of those coaches turning a blind eye to his obligations the way Paterno did. Are coaches like that easy to find?

It is fashionable in some places to make excuses for the legendary Penn State coach Joe Paterno, whose exit from the school he loved is now being spun as a sad but understandable error in judgment, given his status as an “old school” athletic leader.

That is bullshit.

I always admired Al Davis a great deal, and saw him as a special kind of role model. He embraced the "maverick" label, and he successfully walked the thin line between being feared and being loved. Perhaps most importantly, he had a long-term commitment to excellence in the art of branding. The iconic silver-and-black Raiders logo is one of the most enduring brands in all of sports.

Thanks to Jumeirah and Oakley's willingness to take a chance on a rising star, these two firms are now enjoying a global windfall of exposure for their brands.

The lesson: Taking smart risks on emerging opportunities can pay off big.

There are a lot of people I run into every day who have simply taken themselves out of the game. I bet you run into them, too.

I'm talking about the people who have simply stopped giving it their all. I'm talking about the people who have stopped playing to win...

Last week, NFL executives announced plans to suspend players for devastating hits and head shots.

This pisses me off not only because of my love of football. It pisses me off because it’s taking the easy way out. Taking the physicality out of the game means these finely tuned players will no longer be able to go out on the field and give it their all. It will mean that they have to play it safe, always worrying about whether their next hit will be a ‘devastating’ one or not.
